09-C: Systems and Equipment Malfunction

Knowledge

  • immediately establish the proper gliding attitude and airspeed

  • may deviated from any rule of 14 CFR 91 to the extent required to meet that emergency

  • carburetor icing

    • conditions
      • as high as 70° Fahrenheit (22°)
      • relative humidty above 80%
  • emergency frequency / VHF guard

    • 121.5 MHz
    • 243.0 MHz
  • high engine oil temperature

    • likely causes
      • oil level to too low
      • too much power with too lean a mixture
    • unlikely causes
      • higher viscosity (causes pressure, not temperature exceedance)
      • excessively rich mixture (cools down the cylinder heads)
    • corrective actionz
      • enrichen the fuel mixture
      • increase the air speed
      • decrease the RPM
    • effects
      • loss of power
      • excessive oil consumption
      • permanent internal engine damage
  • detonation

    • phenonmen
      • the fuel mixture ignites instanteously instead of burning progressively
      • the unburned charge in the cylinders explodes instead of burning normally
    • different from pre-ignition where combustion takes place prior to normal ignition
    • correceective action
      • reduce engine strain
      • lower the nose slightly to increase airspeed (esp. during climb-out)

K2: System and equipment malfunctions specific to the aircraft, incluing

K2a: Eletrical malfunction

  • does not affect
    • ignition system
    • engine-driven fuel pump
  • does stop
    • lights
    • avionics
    • radios

K2b: Vacuum/pressure and associated flight instrument malfunctions

K2c: Pitot-static system malfunction

  • clogging of the static vent causes failure of
    • airspeed
    • altimeter
    • vertical speed

K2d: Electronic flight deck display malfunction

K2e: Landing gear or flap malfunction

K2f: Inoperative trim

K3: Causes and remedies for smoke or fire onboard the aircraft

K4: Any other system specfific to the aircraft (e.g., supplemental oxygen, deicing)

K5: Inadvertent door or window opening

Engine fire in flight

indications: - fuel flow flucuating - engine running roughly - oil pressure low - black smoke: oil burning - flame: fuel burning

1) Fuel shutoff valve: OFF 2) Mixture: OFF 3) Aux fuel pump: OFF 4) Master: OFF 5) Ignition: REMAINS ON to use up remaining fuel in the fuel lines 6) Cabin Heat and Cabin Air: OFF 7) Airspeed 100 KIAS 8) Emergency Descend & Forced Landing: EXECUTE

Electrical fire in flight

Engine failure: during take-off roll

idea: abort take-off, full shutdown

stop & avoid becoming airborne 1) Throttle: IDLE 2) Brakes: APPLY 3) Flaps: RETRACT

avoid fire 4) Mixture: IDLE CUT OFF 5) Ignition: OFF 6) Master: OFF
